What is life really like in occupied Iraq?
Find out this Thursday, Feb 21, when Iraqi-American Dahlia Wasfi gives a presentation about her experiences in occupied Iraq and the need for an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops. Jason Hurd, an Iraq war veteran and president of the Asheville chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War will give a short introduction. Dr. Wasfi's presentation will be followed by a facilitated question and answer period.

Dr. Dahlia Wasfi was born in Iraq in 1971 and graduated from Swarthmore College in 1993 and from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1997. She has spent time in occupied Iraq and has returned to the States to share the realities of five years of war and occupation with youth and students across the country. Dr. Wasfi will examine the occupation through a medical lens, sharing her perspective on the status of health care in occupied Iraq, the health effects of depleted uranium, and the effects of the U.S. levied sanctions on the Iraqi medical system prior to the invasion. Dr. Wasfi will also speak about the humanitarian crisis in Iraq and the need for an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops.
Jason Hurd is the president of the Asheville chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). Jason served as an Army medic for 10 years – 4 years on active duty followed by 6 years in the Tennessee National Guard. He deployed to Iraq in November 2004, serving a year in central Baghdad with his unit from Bristol, Tennessee.
